A reconnaissance expedition

The 43rd Expedition in Mapuera took place on the Waiwai Indigenous Territory from December 2 to December 4, 2025. Participating were a gynecologist, pediatrician, ultrasonographer, administrator, executive coordinator, pediatrician, endoscopist, radiologist, gynecologist, and social media specialist. A total of 40 gynecology consultations, 52 general medicine consultations, 5 pediatric consultations, and 35 ultrasounds were performed.

All villages reported a significant shortage of medications and general medical care.

What marked this expedition

Mapuera Village

Mapuera Village, where we conducted the expedition, is located in the municipality of Oriximiná (PA), on the banks of the Mapuera River, a tributary of the Trombetas River. It is a regional political center and has approximately 1,000 residents. The primary language is Waiwai, from the Karib family, and it is the only language spoken by many in the region.

Access

Mapuera is 1h30 by plane (departing from Santarém) or 3 days by boat (from Oriximiná).

What we found

The most common complaint in consultations was orthopedic, mainly back pain. It was reported that medical care in the region is available only sporadically. In addition to treatments, equipment and medicines were donated to the community.
