About the expedition

    Increasingly far along the Tapajós

In August 2022, ONG Zoé established a milestone in healthcare delivery in the Amazon region. During our 10th expedition, "Getting Further and Further," we expanded our reach and served Aveiro, a city that had been on our radar since the founding of Zoé. A team of 4 volunteers, including pediatricians and gynecologists for the first time.

Over 20 days, we conducted 473 consultations and exams, including prenatal visits, ultrasounds, blood tests, and urine analyses, with a special focus on gynecology and pediatrics, which served 140 and 147 patients, respectively.

It's incredible to do this kind of work: bringing health professionals to enable access that can be so limited in certain communities. — Carina Lottenberg, gynecologist

We thank Santa Casa, which was on the Abaré boat providing care alongside Zoé.

Explaining in an accessible and respectful way

Dr. Carina said one of the biggest challenges was explaining clinical conditions and treatments in an accessible and respectful manner, given the traditional knowledge of the people being treated.
