Abaré Fantástico
Value of the services donated on this expedition: hours actually worked × the market rate for the specialty, reported by the volunteer or, failing that, the market average — the methodology of note 11 to the audited financial statements. Amounts in Brazilian reais.
This expedition took place aboard the vessel Abaré, with medical consultations in internal medicine, dermatology, and ultrasound examinations for people from the communities of Maripá, Vila Amorim, and Pedra Branca. It was a period of intense work accompanied by Dr. Drauzio Varela and the Globo team, who documented the activities shown on the program Fantástico on April 24, 2022.
In the 9th child, surely a prenatal visit, exams such as ultrasound and the presence of a doctor could have saved the mother's life. — Dr. Márcio, volunteer
After four pregnancies, Elizane, aged 31, had her first ultrasound. This highlights the importance of our ongoing work to bring ultrasound to the region with the highest maternal mortality rate in the country.
Dona Julia Alves, 79 years old, is a wheelchair user. By boat, we traveled to her home in the outskirts of Maripá, and during the clinical exam, the team realized the need for an ultrasound. The team returned to Abaré to request help from a volunteer who, with a portable device, performed the exam.
The expedition was supported by Dr. Drauzio Varella, who participated as a reporter and friend, along with support from UFOPA and the Prefecture of Santarém. A total of 300 hours were donated in Maripá, Pedra Branca, and Vila Amorim.

“I met a baby of 9 months whose mother died during childbirth. There had been eight natural home births without complications. In the 9th child, surely a prenatal visit, exams such as ultrasound and the presence of a doctor could have saved the mother’s life,” lamented Dr. Márcio, one of our volunteers. This is the importance of our continuous effort to bring ultrasound to the region with the highest maternal mortality rate in the country.

The Abaré docked in different communities, and riverside residents and indigenous people traveled to the vessel. However, Dona Julia faced a challenge: she is a wheelchair user. By boat, we went to her residence and realized the need for an ultrasound during the clinical exam. The team returned to the Abaré to request assistance from a volunteer who, with a portable device, performed the exam.
