Continuous program

Psychiatry from afar, care up close

Continuous psychiatric care by telemedicine for riverine and indigenous communities in the Amazon. Between expeditions, patients keep their follow-up through video calls, so care continues even hundreds of kilometers away from urban centers.

Psychiatric care in a riverine community in the Amazon

Why is telepsychiatry essential in the Amazon?

In the most remote parts of the forest, the nearest health service can be hours away by boat. Telemedicine lets psychiatrists see patients without them having to travel, keeping treatment continuous and accessible.

    How the program works

Psychiatry works remotely while psychology works in person on the expeditions, creating an integrated mental health model that ensures continuity and follow-up.

    • Telepsychiatry

Psychiatric consultations by video call let patients in isolated communities receive continuous follow-up without traveling hours by boat.

    • Working with in-person psychology

The psychiatrist works remotely together with psychologists who are in person on the expeditions, forming an integrated mental health model.

    • Connectivity in the field

We bring satellite internet equipment to make teleconsultations possible even in the most remote parts of the Amazon, where there is no cell signal.

    • Continuity of care

Between one expedition and the next, patients keep regular psychiatric follow-up by video call, supporting treatment adherence and medication adjustments.

    The patient's journey

    1. Identification in the field

During the expeditions, the team identifies patients who need psychiatric follow-up.

    2. First teleconsultation

The patient is connected to a volunteer psychiatrist by video call, still in the community, with support from the local team.

    3. Remote follow-up

Regular telemedicine consultations for assessment, medication adjustment and treatment follow-up.

    4. In-person integration

On the next expedition, the psychologists in the field complement the follow-up with in-person assessments.

Telemedicine lets us be present even when we are far away. Patients know someone is following their care, and that changes everything.
